Pet Animal Passports
Rabbits, rats, pet mice, chipmunks and other rodents

Pet Passports - Rabbits RatsYou can bring pet rabbits, pet mice, pet rats and other rodents in and out of the UK to and from any European Union country as well as Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland and the Vatican without a pet passport because rabbits and rodents are not subject to any requirement with regard to rabies.

Pets from other EU countries and from the non-EU countries listed above can enter the UK on any route and at any point of entry, subject to the agreement and conditions of carriage of the transport company you are using. Check in advance that the transport company is willing to transport your pet.

If you are bringing a rabbit or a pet rodent from any non-EU country, other than those listed above, your pet rabbit or rodent will have to be licensed and placed into quarantine for six months.

The maximum number of all types of pet animals (not only rabbits and rodents) each person may bring into the EU from most non-EU listed countries is five. This rule does not apply to animals brought from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland or the Vatican or between EU countries themselves.

For details of transporting more than five animals into the UK from countries except those named above contact Animal Health (formerly State Veterinary Service) International Animal Health Division on 01245 358383.

Please note Commission Decision 2003/459/EC prohibits the import into the EU (including the UK) of prairie dogs originating in or travelling from the USA. It also prohibits the import of certain rodents and squirrels originating in or travelling from certain countries of the sub-Saharan region of Africa.
